The School of Music, Dance and Theatre at Arizona State University seeks an exceptional industry professional and experienced teacher to join our faculty in the popular music program. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated expertise in music industry and community engagement. This is a full-time, tenure-track appointment at the rank of assistant professor, beginning fall 2023. This position will teach on the downtown Phoenix and Tempe Campuses.

We seek an innovative and imaginative individual who will participate in and further our effort to reimagine what arts education means in the 21st century. The Assistant Professor of Popular Music Business will teach courses such as Music Industry Studies, Music Contracts and Negotiations, Legal Aspects in the Music Business, Music Marketing, and Music Management, as well as courses in the candidate’s areas of expertise within the industry; develop the music industry subspecialty in the popular music concentration; develop and advise student-centered music business programming initiatives that are reflective of current industry practices; oversee the development of internship offerings and partnerships; initiate meaningful collaborations with faculty colleagues, the larger university community and regional professional arts organizations; and advise and participate in all legal matters pertaining to the development of the program. The candidate is expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching with the ability to instruct at the undergraduate level, both in-person and online, and to recruit high-quality students regionally, nationally and internationally. The candidate is also expected to maintain a portfolio of research or creative activity commensurate with a tenure-track position, and to work effectively with faculty colleagues and administration in service to satisfy and advance the mission of the ASU School of Music, Dance and Theatre.

Required qualifications:

• Master’s degree in music or a related field or commensurate experience. A graduate degree is required for international candidates.
• National and/or international career in the music industry, with evidence of an extensive industry network.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching, development and/or mentorship in relation to the music industry, or other related areas.
• Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in creative activity and/or research, teaching and service to the community or profession.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Desired qualifications:

• Broad experience in the music industry including knowledge of current and best practices in legal matters, management, publishing/licensing, development, and/or marketing.
• Professional career and experience in the music industry in multiple markets.
• Evidence of administrative or leadership experience in the music industry.
• Evidence of direct mentorship and workforce development of emerging industry professionals. 
• Ability to design and implement curriculum and programs, including online, in-person and hybrid courses.
• The ability to advance innovative teaching practices and envision new paradigms of arts education.
• The ability to work and collaborate across the arts and design disciplines of the Herberger Institute and with people outside the arts, across the ASU campuses, and in the community.
• The ability to attract resources, including students, partnerships, resources, donors, grants or other sources of support to advance the mission of the popular music program, the School of Music, Dance and Theatre, and the Herberger Institute.
