A degree in Composition or Theory

The theory and composition program in the ASU Herberger Institute School of Music, Dance and Theatre at Arizona State University fosters students to develop the the technical, creative and critical-thinking skills necessary to pursue a meaningful career in either music composition or music theory. The faculty are nationally and internationally recognized, active theorists or composers whose musical interests represents a wide variety of genres and areas including chamber and orchestral music, experimental performance, music perception and cognition, queer studies, interdisciplinary collaboration, acoustic ecology, electroacoustic and acousmatic music, experimental popular forms and more. The School of Music, Dance and Theatre offers the Bachelor of Music in Theory and Composition. Students must choose either a concentration in composition or a concentration in theory. At the graduate level, we offer the Master of Music in Composition and the Doctor of Musical Arts in Composition. In collaboration with the GAME School, we jointly offer a concentration in interdisciplinary digital media in either the Master of Music in Composition or the Doctor of Musical Arts in Music.
