The School of Music, Dance and Theatre at Arizona State University seeks an exceptional artist-teacher in studio engineering and recording to join the popular music faculty. This is a full-time appointment, appointment type and rank based on experience, beginning Fall 2021.
The successful candidate will develop the sound engineering and recording curriculum including, but not limited to, audio engineering and production, mixing and critical listening, and courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. Additionally, the candidate will be expected to run key recording sessions in the facility, and develop and prepare student assistant engineers. The candidate will mentor students through the specialization and capstone processes. Further responsibilities will include recruiting high-quality students regionally, nationally and internationally, and mentoring and assisting students in developing their professional goals. The candidate is expected to possess a broad knowledge of the sound engineering and recording industry as well as significant first-hand experience working within it, and to continue to pursue a professional career and actively participate in creative activity and/or research at the school. The candidate is also expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching with the ability to instruct at the undergraduate levels, both in-person and online, and to work effectively with faculty colleagues and administration in service to satisfy and advance the mission of the ASU School of Music, Dance and Theatre. The popular music concentration within the BA program in music in the School of Music, Dance and Theatre at Arizona State University welcomes and accommodates 21st-century musicians interested in popular music, music industry studies and entrepreneurship. This includes but is not limited to singers and songwriters, laptop performers, producers, composers, instrumentalists, vocalists and musicians whose practices and playing styles are representative of varied popular music idioms. Students in this concentration develop general musicianship and are invited to specialize in multiple areas of study which include songwriting, production, composition, performance, engineering, sound design, events, music business, education, and advocacy work. All students gain a working knowledge of the music industry and music business, and the entrepreneurial skills necessary to gain meaningful employment upon graduation. Students participate in individual applied study in chosen specializations, as well as a variety of group performances and production opportunities. Internship courses provide opportunities for students to apply their learning in a real-life context and begin building relationships. A capstone senior year allows students to work more intimately with faculty on perfecting their craft as well as prepare for the shift from ASU to the industry. We seek an innovative artist-teacher who will act as chief engineer and educator for our new state of the art studio facilities in downtown Phoenix.
- National and/or international sound engineering and recording career in the music industry.
- Demonstrate excellence in teaching, development and/or mentorship in relation to engineering and producing, the music industry, or other related areas.
- Master’s degree in related field orcommensurate professional experience.
- Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in creative activity and/or research, teaching and service to the community or profession.
- Masters degree(s) in audio production or related field preferred.
- Expertise in multiple popular music practices, such as producing, recording, mastering, marketing, music industry, etc.
- Experience with sound engineering and recording of multiple genres of music.
- Expertise in sound for visual media and studio recording, studio maintenance, and/or VR/AR audio.
- Experience developing online courses.
- The ability to advance innovative teaching practices and envision new paradigms of arts education.
- The ability to work and collaborate across artistic disciplines, with people outside the arts, across campus, and in the community.
- The ability to attract resources, including students, resources, donors, grants or other sources of support that advance the Herberger mission.
- Evidence of administrative or leadership experience in the music industry.
