Spend your summer at the ASU School of Music, Dance and Theatre!

The School of Music, Dance and Theatre is offering summer music courses and workshops for high school students of all levels. From songwriting to powerful practice techniques and everything in between, there is something for everyone!

Classes and workshops are listed below in date order.

Change Your Mind, Change Your Playing

  • June 30-August 10   Tues and Thur   10:30 a.m.-12 p.m

  • Workshop: $350

Trumpeter Joe Burgstaller, formerly of Canadian Brass, presents a peak performance course through a mixture of interactive presentations, discussions, performance sessions, assignments and weekly reflections. Sessions begin with a debriefing session (a performance “support group” of sorts), where participants discuss their experiences applying the concepts from the course since the last session. Each session layers in more topics, exercises, experiments and assignments as participants gradually build their own custom peak performance lifestyle. Open to high school students, college students and community members. High school students who are interested in auditioning for the workshop should contact joeburgstaller@asu.edu prior to registering.

Trans* Voices Class

Explore the use of the voice by learning vocal techniques in a supportive group setting with special attention to the needs and considerations of transgender singers. Students will learn basic voice anatomy, exercises to improve breath support for phonation, increase range for singing, speaking, inflection and intonation, and discover the communicative and expressive abilities of their voices. This course is run in collaboration with the ASU Speech and Hearing Clinic. This workshop is available for entering freshmen in high school.

The Music of Batman from 1966-present

  • Workshop: $250

Study the many different approaches to scoring Batman on screen in this fun and informative course. From Neal Hefty and Nelson Riddle's big band style in the 60's, through Danny Elfman's grand symphonic approach up to Hans Zimmer's electronic and orchestral hybrid scores, the iconic soundtracks for Batman have been exciting, influential and varied.

2021 ASU Virtual Summer Clarinet Workshop

The camp will include a series of masterclasses and private instruction. Masterclasses will cover the following topics: How to Warm Up and Why it’s Important, Bass Clarinet, The Role of the Tongue, Performance and Audition Preparation Skills, Advanced Techniques (circular breathing, double tonguing, extreme upper register) and more. This camp is available for high school freshmen and college students and is by audition only. Interested students should contact Joshua.T.Gardner@asu.edu and RSpring@asu.edu for information on submitting video links. Students approved to participate will receive the registration link to complete the registration and payment. Videos must be received by June 1st. Registration and payment must be completed by June 8th.

ASU Popular Music Songwriting, Production and Performance Intensive

  • June 23-25   Wed-Fri   10 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-3 p.m.

  • Workshop: $250

A 3 day songwriting, production and performance experience open to all levels, instrumentation and/or musicianship. Each participant will have equal time engaging with each of the idioms: songwriting, production and performance. The first day starts by exploring philosophical concepts, day two moves on to applicable techniques and day three is about finishing and receiving feedback, with additional workshopping sessions. There will be several performance opportunities and chances to collaborate with your classmates along the way. Producers welcome!
