Popular Music Lab

This workshop is a hands-on exploration of popular music and the ways that popular musicians learn. There is an emphasis placed on participatory and informal music-making in each of the core music-learning processes (creating, performing, responding, and connecting). Digital instruments, live instruments and voice will be used in music-making.

Mariachi 101: Building a Program

Through this course, participants will be provided with resources, insight, and advice on building a school mariachi program from scratch, one that is inclusive of students from all backgrounds..

Guitars in the Schools

This course is catered to music educators tasked with teaching class guitar at the public school level and serves to boost the confidence of our music educators to provide quality instruction on the guitar. All levels of guitar are welcomed and encouraged to attend!

The class will focus on covering 3 major areas: Group instruction of Beginner guitar technique and note reading, Creative Projects, and ensemble work. The course will also provide resources for these areas of study to broaden the materials for our educators.

 

Choral Leadership: Techniques & Repertoire

Music and Community Engagement

Songwriting for Music Educators

Educators will engage in multiple text and music-first approaches to writing original songs while also developing practical approaches for a personal pedagogy of songwriting. Techniques covered include but are not limited to Toplining, Documentary Songwriting, and Object Writing in both individual and collaborative songwriting approaches. .

Google for Education offers numerous tools that music educators can use in their classrooms to create and share digital content, communicate effectively, collaborate within and outside of the classroom, and increase productivity. Throughout the course, teachers will complete practical projects to strengthen their understanding of Google for Education, with the intent that each project can be used in their classrooms. Successful completion of the course will prepare teachers for the Google for Education Level 1 Certification Exam. Participants should bring a laptop computer or Chromebook with access to Google Workspace for Education. Sync option available.

Kodály Level 1

Level I pedagogy and solfége focuses specifically on pedagogy for beginners of any grade level, including singing, movement, hand signs and solfége, and the development of music reading and writing skills. Planning and delivery of instruction as well as curriculum development for music instruction are included.

Kodály Level 2

Level II focuses specifically on pedagogy, repertoire, and material, with a review of Level 1 techniques, pedagogy and repertoire as appropriate. In addition to concentrated work in singing, movement, hand signs and solfége, and the development of music reading and writing skills, Level II students engage folk song research and analysis. Choral singing and conducting are included in the Level II curriculum.

Kodaly Level 3

Advanced studies in Kodály process and pedagogy, which may including teaching practices, folk songs and repertoire, curriculum, how to use solfege to improve musicianship, choir, choral conducting, and special topics.

Orff Level 1

Level I focuses on music fundamental speech and movement, rhythmic development, basic recorder skills, non-pitched percussion, and melodic development and pitched percussion skills focused on music in the pentatonic as well as beginning I-V harmonizations. Participants are expected to complete various assignments, including speech pieces, ostinato assignments, and instrument settings, and to demonstrate ability to play the soprano recorder.

Orff Level 2

Students who enroll in level II courses must have successfully completed level I course work. Level II course work begins with a review of level I pentatonic material, then extends into full diatonic work, including chord changes, and/or modes. An introduction to modes is included. In addition to proficiency on soprano recorder, level II students are expected to develop proficiency on alto recorder. Assignments include speech, movement and instrumental work in extended forms and with multiple parts and voicings.

For decades, the teaching profession in the United States has flirted with what Gloria Ladson-Billings refers to as “the demographic impairment,” an imbalance between student and teacher populations along the lines of race and culture. Using culturally relevant pedagogy as a guiding framework, students will be positioned to understand and respond to the demographic impairment by working to construct culturally relevant spaces in the Arts.
