Songwriting for Music Educators

Educators will engage in multiple text and music-first approaches to writing original songs while also developing practical approaches for a personal pedagogy of songwriting.
Informal Music Learning in Popular Music
- 1 week
- Dates: June 2-6

This course is a hands-on exploration of popular music and the ways that popular musicians learn. There is emphasis placed on participatory and informal music-making in each of the core music-learning processes) creating, performing, responding and connecting).
Kodály Level I
- 2 week

Level I pedagogy and solfége focuses specifically on pedagogy for beginners of any grade level, including singing, movement, hand signs and solfége, and the development of music reading and writing skills. Planning and delivery of instruction as well as curriculum development for music instruction are included.
Kodály Review
- 2 week

Kodály Review is open to anyone who has taken one of the Kodaly Levels courses and is interested in repeating, reviewing, brushing up, or joining in on all or parts of a levels course for their own personal growth.
Kodály Advanced Studies

Culturally Relevant Pedagogy in Music Teaching

For decades, the teaching profession in the United States has consistently flirted with what Gloria Ladson-Billings refers to as “the demographic impairment,” an imbalance between student and teacher populations along the lines of race and culture. As a result of this phenomenon, many inequities have been funded and sustained, including those that continue to marginalize racially minoritized students and their accompanying cultures. Using culturally relevant pedagogy as a guiding framework, participants will acquire in-depth understandings and a variety of skills that will better equip them as they move into the world to engage all students.
Music IS a STEM Content Area

In this course, participants will explore how Music classes, from individual lessons to large conducted ensembles can very much be STEM content areas. Participants will explore how the student musical creative process can be evolved to directly and specifically target key, significant STEM elements. Participation in Music Creativity and Technology is preferred but not required. Participants do not need a STEM background of any kind.
Guitars in the Schools

This course is catered to music educators tasked with teaching class guitar at the public school level and serves to boost the confidence of our music educators to provide quality instruction on the guitar. All levels of guitar are welcomed and encouraged to attend!
The class will focus on covering 3 major areas: Group instruction of Beginner guitar technique and note reading, Creative Projects, and ensemble work. The course will also provide resources for these areas of study to broaden the materials for our educators.
Music Creativity and Technology

In this course participants will develop concrete lesson materials, based on their own specific needs, interests, and prior knowledge, to help students explore and develop their individual, and, as needed, ensemble creative process using various common music technologies. Topics will include recording individuals and ensembles both in rehearsal and performance, common music technology usage to expand student creative potential, and using music technology to reach a wider student demographic. Participants do not need any prior experience with any music technology (Microphones, Mixers, DAWs etc.) though more advanced learners will be able to refine and further advance their existing skills.
Google Fundamentals for Music Teachers

Google for Education offers numerous tools that music educators can use in their classrooms to create and share digital content, communicate effectively, collaborate within and outside of the classroom, and increase productivity. Throughout the course, teachers will complete practical projects to strengthen their understanding of Google for Education, with the intent that each project can be used in their classrooms.
Strings Toolbox

This workshop is designed for all teachers who work with string players, and for high school and college students interested in string teaching. We will discuss strategies and materials for getting beginning string players off to a successful start, as well as sequences for developing bowing, fingering, and vibrato skills for advancing players at all levels. Whether you are a native string player or a non-string specialist, join the fun and add to your string teaching toolbox! .
Perspectives in Music Teaching and Learning

Orff Level 1
- 2 weeks
- Dates: June 16-27
- Days and time: M-F 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., in-person only, Music EB-24

- 2-4 graduate credit or CEUs (up to 65 clock hours)
Level I focuses on music fundamental speech and movement, rhythmic development, basic recorder skills, non-pitched percussion, and melodic development and pitched percussion skills focused on music in the pentatonic as well as beginning I-V harmonizations. Participants are expected to complete various assignments, including speech pieces, ostinato assignments, and instrument settings, and to demonstrate ability to play the soprano recorder.
Orff Level 3

Level III course work begins with a review of level I and II material. The particular challenge of level III is work in the various modes and in extended musical forms. Participants are expected to demonstrate proficiency on soprano, alto, and tenor recorders. Assignments include full settings in various modes and forms, with developed orchestrations in various formats. A teaching proficiency at the end of the course is required.
