One-week Workshops
Exciting Ideas for Strings and Orchestra

This course introduces a sequenced beginning string curriculum designed for both music education students and current orchestra teachers. Participants will explore strategies that help beginners develop strong fundamentals and advance more quickly on their instruments.
Perspectives in Music Teaching and Learning

Students in Perspectives in Music Teaching and Learning will explore big-picture questions about music education through discussion, reflection, readings, and multimedia sources. Students will investigate a personally meaningful question and build an annotated bibliography that connects theory, practice, and professional insight.
Building Community in Music Learning and Teaching

Emphasizing relationship-building and ensemble culture, this course equips music educators with practical tools to create music spaces where every student feels seen, valued, and empowered to contribute.
Building a Cohesive String Section Sound

This course examines practical strategies for developing a unified and resonant ensemble sound in string orchestras. Drawing from the Bornoff Approach and other pedagogical frameworks, participants will explore techniques for teaching tone production, ensemble listening, balance, blend, and intonation.

Popular Music Lab

This workshop is a hands-on exploration of popular music and the ways that popular musicians learn. There is an emphasis placed on participatory and informal music-making in each of the core music-learning processes (creating, performing, responding, and connecting). Digital instruments, live instruments and voice will be used in music-making.

Kodály and Orff Two-week Courses
Kodály Level I
- 2 weeks
- Dates: June 1-12
- Days and time: M-F 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in-person only, Music building W218

- 3-4 graduate credit or CEUs (65 clock hours)
Level I pedagogy and solfége focuses specifically on pedagogy for beginners of any grade level, including singing, movement, hand signs and solfége, and the development of music reading and writing skills. Planning and delivery of instruction as well as curriculum development for music instruction are included.
Kodály Level II
- 2 weeks
- Dates: June 1-12
- Days and time: M-F 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in-person only, Music building W220

- 3-4 graduate credit or CEUs (65 clock hours)
Level II focuses specifically on pedagogy, repertoire, and material, with a review of Level 1 techniques, pedagogy and repertoire as appropriate. In addition to concentrated work in singing, movement, hand signs and solfége, and the development of music reading and writing skills, Level II students engage folk song research and analysis. Choral singing and conducting are included in the Level II curriculum.
Kodály Level III
- 2 weeks

Advanced studies in Kodály process and pedagogy, which may include teaching practices, folk songs and repertoire, curriculum, how to use solfege to improve musicianship, choir, choral conducting, and special topics.
Kodály Review

Kodaly Review is open to anyone who has taken one of the Kodály Levels courses and is interested in repeating, reviewing, brushing up, or joining in on all or parts of a levels course for their own personal growth.
Kodály Advanced Studies

This course is for those who completed all three levels of Kodaly and wish to complete national Kodaly certification or for continuing study.
Orff Level I
- 2 weeks

- Instructors: Carla Cose-Giallella, David Hayden, Joshua Block,
- 3-4 graduate credit or CEUs (65 clock hours)
Level I focuses on music fundamental speech and movement, rhythmic development, basic recorder skills, non-pitched percussion, and melodic development and pitched percussion skills focused on music in the pentatonic as well as beginning I-V harmonizations. Participants are expected to complete various assignments, including speech pieces, ostinato assignments, and instrument settings, and to demonstrate ability to play the soprano recorder.
Orff Review
