Graduate theatre admission
We invite you to apply to one of our graduate theatre programs.
1. Apply to ASU graduate admissions
Applications become available September 1. The application deadline is Jan. 15.
Applications received after the deadline may not be accommodated.
Prepare the following for your graduate admission application
- Non-refundable application fee.
- Institutional history: Attendance dates and degree information for all institutions previously attended.
- Grade Point Average (on a 4.0 scale): undergraduate, junior/senior and, if applicable, graduate GPAs.
- Submit transcripts and test scores to ASU graduate admission services.
- Official transcripts: Sealed hardcopy or electronic transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate coursework must be sent directly to ASU graduate admission services. All international transcripts must be submitted in the original language accompanied by an official English translation. Translations must be literal, complete versions of the originals and must be translated by a university, government official or official translation service. You may not complete your own translation. If an email is requested to send your transcripts, please send to gradtranscripts@asu.edu.
- Proof of English proficiency (non-native English-speaking applicants only). Please review minimum score requirements on the website.
2. Program specific requirements and information
In addition to the requirements outlined on the graduate college website, each degree program requires additional application materials to be submitted in your theatre application. You must apply to ASU Graduate Admissions (step 1) before beginning your theatre application (step 2). You will need your ASU login information from step 1 in order to complete step 2.

Submit your theatre application
Help with ASU Login Information
Follow the instructions on the ASURITE Activation Page to activate your ASU login and set your password. Then, log in to My.asu.edu. Once you've successfully logged in to your ASU account, you will be able to use the same login information to log in to the MDT application portal. Email MDTadmissions@asu.edu for assistance.
If you encounter an error while trying to log in to the MDT application portal despite successfully logging in to My ASU, please wait 48-72 hours for your information to be updated across all ASU platforms and try again.
Program-specific requirements

Your application will include:
- Statement of purpose: You should clearly explain their aesthetic and educational philosophies and future career goals. After reading these statements the faculty should understand not only your current passions, but also why the Theatre for Youth program at ASU would be an appropriate fit to meet your artistic, educational, practical and scholarly goals. We are looking for thoughtful, well-informed artists/scholars/educators and citizens.
- Current curriculum vitae: Current resumes are also acceptable, although acting resumes are not useful for acceptance purposes.
- A work sample: A web-based electronic portfolio/link is preferred. Your work sample should allow the program to see your aesthetic frame, teaching competency or skills in particular realms. Work samples are not expected to fit a particular format but rather should showcase your unique abilities and aesthetic skills. For example, a collection of PDF documents or other samples of creative writing, lesson plans, reviews, photographs or video of creative practice such as productions, or any other material that demonstrates your core skills and competencies.
- Three letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with your work. You will submit the contact information in your application. Please do not submit letters on your own behalf or those from family or friends. Applicant is responsible for following up with references for timely submission and receipt.
- Interview: An interview is required for admission into the MFA program. Selected applicants will be invited to interview for the program in February. Applicants will be contacted by the email on their application and notified of the next steps in the process.
The application will be available Sept. 1. The application deadline is Jan. 15.
Your application will include:
- Statement of career goals: Describe why you are interested in pursue the MFA in Theatre with a concentration in dramatic writing. Describe your goals in pursuing the degree, why you are a good fit for the program, what you might contribute to the community and what experiences have prepared you to be a successful student in the program. Approximately 300 to 600 words in length.
- Current resume: List any relevant experiences.
- Three letters of recommendation: You will submit the contact information of three professionals familiar with your work. Please do not submit letters on your own behalf, or those from family or friends.*Applicant is responsible for following up with references for timely submission and receipt.
- Manuscript sample of either a full-length play (60 pages or more) or a series of one-act plays (30 pages minimum).

Achieve your artistic, professional, and educational goals with a genuinely transdisciplinary education path within the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts.
The Theatre (Interdisciplinary Digital Media and Performance) program is designed to give you the experience and tools you need to work and succeed in a wide variety of contexts at the intersection of technology and experience. We look at digital media as a lens for making art, telling stories and creating meaningful experiences.
We train artists, creative technologists, evaluators, designers and entrepreneurs in the field of digital media for live experience, building on a foundation of core courses in theatre.
Alumni of our programs design projections on Broadway, design immersive experiences and interactive environments, lead university programs in interactive media, direct media teams at major institutions and produce field-leading research and creative work.
This graduate program is offered through the School of Music, Dance and Theatre in collaboration with the School of Arts, Media and Engineering

Your application will include:
- Statement of purpose: you should describe your background in theatre, your interest in and suitability for work in the intersection of theatre and digital media.
- Portfolio: submit materials that support your statement of purpose and be in multiple formats (e.g., photographs, renderings, video, sounds, apps or other media writing samples, electronic performance materials, etc.)
- Current resume: List any relevant experiences.
- Sample of scholarly writing: The sample can be from your previous degree, from an independent work or publication.
- Three letters of recommendation from professionals familiar with your work. You will submit their contact information in the application system. Please do not submit letters on your own behalf or those from family or friends. Applicant is responsible for following up with references for timely submission and receipt.
- Decision letters: Decision letters will be sent to applicants by mid-March to the email address submitted in the ASU Graduate Admissions application. Teaching assistantships and scholarship awards will also be sent with the admission letter.
The application for Fall 2025 admission will be available Sept. 1, 2024. Following this cycle, the program will next accept applications in Fall 2028.
Your application will include:
- Statement of purpose: Describe why you are interested in pursuing an MFA in Theatre with a concentration in directing. Describe your goals in pursuing the degree, why you are a good fit for the program, what you might contribute to community, and what experiences have prepared you to be a successful student in the program. Approximately 300 to 600 words in length.
- Current resume: List any relevant experiences.
- Three recommendation letters: You will submit the contact information of three professionals familiar with your work in the Graduate University Admissions Application.
- A written directorial approach to a play selected by the review committee. Applicants should contact Professor Jerry Ruiz.
- Interview: An interview is required and can be completed virtually, on-campus or at one of the locations for URTA National Unified Auditions and Interviews. Interviews completed virtually or through an on-campus visit will be scheduled by appointment. Please contact Professor Jerry Ruiz to schedule your interview.
