Fall 2024: Jan. 15, 2024

Transfer Students
The ASU dance program is a fall-starting program and offers courses that we encourage to be taken in sequence. If you transfer to ASU starting in the spring semester, it will take you five semesters to complete the program.

*You do not need to be admitted through ASU Undergraduate Admissions prior to submission. However, you must apply to ASU (step 1) before you can begin your dance application (step 2). You will need your ASU login information from step 1 in order to complete step 2. Full admittance to ASU is required before an applicant is eligible to enroll as a BFA Dance Major.

Application materials

The dance program revolves around the notion of fostering and nurturing creativity. This central principle informs all areas of practice and is supported by a core set of values - humanity, leadership, reflection and context. Complete a 250-word essay answering the questions below. Please upload into your dance application as a PDF.

  • First-time dance applicants: Describe why the core values listed above are important to dance and how you hope to develop as a student at ASU. Tell us in detail what your focus or speciality is in dance. How do you wish to use the ASU dance program to continue your education?
  • Re-applying applicants: Describe what you have done to develop yourself and your movement or creative practice since your last application (identify workshops attended, ASU classes, master classes, key experiences etc.) and address the core values of the program as listed above.

Provide any training and related experience such as: genres or types of dance, cultural and social dance, number of years, names of schools, studios, workshops, master classes, intensives, community and participatory engaged practices, etc. Also include cyphers, battles, theory courses, choreography and production experience, such as DJ and mixing, costume, lighting, sound, technology, etc.

Provide and verify contact information for three references in your dance application. At least two letters of recommendation (one technique, one academic) are required from an instructor or someone with whom you have had professional or artistic interaction. Your recommenders will be contacted to submit their recommendation within our system. Do not submit letters on your own behalf. Letters of recommendation must be written on official organization, school or company letterhead. *Applicant is responsible for following up with references for timely submission.

Upload a YouTube or Vimeo link of a dance solo or duo for partnership or social dance genres. Submissions may be in any genre, can be filmed anywhere, inside or outside, and should be no more than 1–2 minutes in length.

You may also include supplemental materials such as audio recordings, video recordings, jpegs of artwork or writings as two additional uploads. The link should be submitted directly in your application.

All participants must complete and sign the ASU Release, Indemnity and Assumption of Risk form via the DocuSign links in the dance application. Minors under age 18 must provide the email address of the parent or guardian who will be contacted to obtain their signed approval.
