ASU Wind Bands celebrate the 60th anniversary of ASU Gammage (formerly known as Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium) and the 1964 College Band Directors National Association National Conference that was held in the then two-month-old building. The evening will feature music from the conference and spend time honoring Frank Lloyd Wright and his love of music.

The Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony welcome the Mountain Ridge Wind Ensemble (Aaron Vogal, director) to campus to help open our season! We also welcome Nicole Piunno as Composer-In-Residence. Her residency will be highlighted by the Wind Ensemble giving the world premiere of her first symphony, Sunflower Studies. The concert also includes the world premiere of Sum of Our Parts by Allison Loggins-Hull and works by Bryant, Milburn and Vaughan Williams. Joining the Wind Symphony is Dr. Benjamin Lorenzo from Kent State University conducting a new piece La Silla by Juan Pablo Contreras.

The ASU Chamber Winds are an invited performer at the College Band Directors National Association Western/Northwestern Division Conference. The ensemble, comprised of 10 student musicians, are performing music by Mozart, Milhaud and Piazzolla and two works by Bologne, one world premiere and one Washington premiere. The ensemble was selected through peer-review to perform at the conference. Jason Caslor, associate professor and director of bands, and Jamal Duncan, assistant professor, are conducting. The students will have the opportunity to attend various lectures, workshops and performances at the conference.

Internationally renowned conductor Carl St.Clair leads the ASU Symphony Orchestra and ASU Wind Symphony in the 2021-22 season finale with works by Berlioz and Ticheli, ending with Respighi’s thunderous Pines of Rome.

ASU Wind Bands have chosen to go virtual for at least the first part of the 2020-21 season!

The various ensembles will be recording works by Nicole Piunno, Kevin Day, Cait Nishimura Pete Meechan, Marc Mellits, Igor Stravinsky, and new works by ASU composers. We are also commissioning new works by Steven Bryant, Kevin Day, and Allan Daleus.

The groups recorded over 60 works, connected with over 20 guests artists, collaborated with 17 ASU student composers.
