A degree in Piano
A world-class program of study
The piano program in the ASU School of Music, Design and Theatre is designed to nurture the musical interests of each individual student, while developing a keen sense of style and skills needed to create performances at the highest level. The ASU Herberger Institute School of Music, Dance and Theatre keyboard faculty have international reputations as pianists, recording artists and teachers, and they are committed to helping students through weekly lessons, studio and repertoire classes, guest master classes and other performance and listening opportunities. Additionally, the School of Music, Dance and Theatre is home to the Bösendorfer and Yamaha USASU International Piano competitions held every two years and has brought world renowned artists such as Martha Argerich, Sergei Babayan and many others to the ASU campus.
The keyboard faculty of the ASU School of Music, Dance and Theatre are committed to the diversity of our students and the repertoire which they study and perform. We recognize that many women and BIPOC composers have been overlooked in what has become the standard concert repertoire. We affirm the lives of these composers and recognize the great contributions they have made and are making. We believe that the diversity of our community is one of our strengths and encourage students to expand their knowledge of piano repertoire, composers and styles.
ASU’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts School of Music, Dance and Theatre represents one of the most attractive and exciting places for intensive study of keyboard instruments today. This phenomenon is created by the combination of outstanding faculty, talented students, unusual facilities, a special university and the surrounding city. Students can choose between majoring in piano performance, collaborative piano and piano performance and pedagogy.
The School of Music, Dance and Theatre presents more than 700 concerts and recitals each year, so you experience an atmosphere of constant listening and performing opportunities on campus. The metropolitan area offers additional opportunities. Music’s curriculum is enhanced by participating in Arizona State University’s academic model, and by the university’s manifold elective course offerings. Finally, another important consideration is the fact that any keyboard degree from ASU prepares the graduate for multiple career possibilities.
