Margaret Emily Schmidt Scholarship Endowment

This scholarship is established in honor of Margaret Emily Schmidt.

The Margaret Emily Schmidt Scholarship in Music Learning and Teaching was established to create a sustainable resource to support students who possess the desire and commitment to make a difference in the lives of their students and communities by becoming leaders in music learning and teaching.

This scholarship is established in honor of Margaret Emily Schmidt, professor of music learning and teaching in strings and assistant director at the Arizona State University School of Music, Dance and Theatre. Schmidt has had a significant impact on music education in the state of Arizona and across the United States and is the mainstay of string music education at Arizona State University. This scholarship is a tribute to her impact on students at ASU and to her contributions to music education throughout Arizona and the U.S. Her former students are teaching throughout Arizona and at colleges and universities across the nation.

As a tribute to Margaret Schmidt, this endowment was launched by a generous gift from Sandra Stauffer, senior associate dean in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts and professor in the School or Music, Dance and Theatre, and Jill Sullivan, professor of music education in the School of Music, Dance and Theatre. Additional gifts are anticipated from faculty, staff, family members, friends, and other admirers of Margaret Schmidt.

The Margaret Emily Schmidt Scholarship will provide an undergraduate or graduate student studying music learning and teaching with funding to realize their dreams. The Margaret Emily Schmidt Scholarship is administered by the ASU Foundation.

A scholarship gift is one of the most important ways of supporting and partnering with outstanding students studying music. Scholarship support goes directly to the student’s educational expenses, which for an aspiring young educator can be quite insurmountable, and now more than ever before, often is the deciding factor in a student’s ability to enroll in the ASU School of Music, Dance and Theatre.
