The Visiting Quartet Residency Program offered in the School of Music, Dance and Theatre is a distinct program among music schools nationwide that integrates visiting resident artists with a comprehensive chamber music curriculum, providing the greatest educational chamber music experience possible.

Each year the School of Music, Dance and Theatre string faculty select a professional string quartet as resident artists to work with ASU music students on unique curricula while helping them hone collaborative and communicative skills that transcend music study.

The visiting quartet presents concerts, demonstrations, lectures, master classes and open rehearsals during their residency, and the students who study with the quartet present fall and spring semester culminating concerts. These experiences deepen musicianship, build confidence and connect students directly to the professional world.

“The opportunity to study with a professional ensemble allows students to see the collaborative process from the inside out — including the way the quartet communicates, rehearses, performs, manages and prioritizes its schedule,” said Jonathan Swartz, professor of violin and artistic director and founder of the program.

Over the course of a four-year undergraduate degree, students will have had the opportunity to study with four different professional string quartets, while covering all the major pillars of chamber music literature. To learn more about the program visit the Visiting Quartet Residency Program.
